Over 1,400 educators attend free AI training delivered by RMIT

RMIT 91tv Vietnam has delivered a free training program for teachers across Vietnam as part of its initiative to enhance educators’ capabilities in applying AI technologies, particularly generative AI, in teaching and learning activities.

The project and training program, "Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in Teaching and Learning," were developed and implemented by a research team from the RMIT School of Science, Engineering & Technology in collaboration with their colleagues at RMIT 91tv Vietnam.

The project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Alumni Grants Fund managed by Aus4Skills.

Throughout November and December 2024, the program reached over 1,400 educators and education managers across Vietnam through two distinct yet complementary approaches.

The first component is an online workshop series that attracted over 800 participants in its initial session. Delivered entirely in Vietnamese, the six-part online program covered critical aspects of AI integration in education, from UNESCO's AI Competency Framework for educators and students, to practical applications of AI in teaching and learning tasks such as lesson planning, designing assessments, creating multimedia content for creative learning, and customising AI chatbot assistants to support education.

As the series progressed, the workshops continued to engage around 600 participants per session, demonstrating sustained interest among educators across the country.

Besides the online workshops, the project also conducted two-day training programs in collaboration with the local Departments of Education and Training in Ninh Thuan province and Can Tho city. Over 650 teachers and district/school education managers participated in the face-to-face sessions, with the first day focusing on primary educators and managers, and the second day dedicated to secondary and high school staff.

The program's reach extended beyond formal training sessions. A dedicated Facebook community group, which has attracted over 2,000 members and a high level of engagement, has become a vibrant platform for ongoing learning and interaction.

Participants can rewatch and discuss previous workshops, as well as share the multimedia creations that they generated using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Suno, Canva, and Gamma, for feedback from other educators and RMIT experts.

RMIT lecturer and project lead Dr Tran Duc Linh emphasised that the project's goal is to not only introduce AI tools to educators but also integrate them with appropriate pedagogical approaches.

He said, “Such integration will equip educators with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively leverage AI in teaching and learning activities, enabling them to design engaging, effective, and inclusive learning experiences while preparing learners to thrive in a technology-driven future.”

Participant feedback highlighted the program's practical value. Ms Nguyen Thi Thanh Van from Lac Nghiep Primary School in Ninh Thuan province said the content helped her solve problems she had previously encountered while using AI, and gave her new knowledge that she can share with her colleagues.

Mr Nguyen Van Lieng, Deputy Head of Primary Education at the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, hailed the training as a big success. "I’ve never seen the teachers engage in a training session this enthusiastically and seriously. I am grateful to the RMIT 91tv project team for providing an opportunity for Can Tho's education leaders and teachers to explore and learn about AI applications in education," he said.

The program represents a collaborative effort between RMIT 91tv Vietnam, local educational authorities, and educational communities in Vietnam. By providing free, accessible training, the initiative aims to support Vietnam's ongoing digital transformation in education.

Mr Pham Chi Thanh, an RMIT lecturer and the project deputy lead, concluded: "The enthusiasm of the participants in both the offline and online workshops created a lively training and exchange atmosphere. We believe that this knowledge will be effectively applied by the teachers in their actual teaching practices at their schools.”

The RMIT project team expects to hold further activities and workshops in 2025, with additional funding from RMIT Vietnam’s Strategic Innovation Challenge. Vietnamese-speaking educators can express their interest in attending via this form: .
